When to watch

Lake Mikata is one of the Mikata Five Lakes, and waterbirds gather there in winter. The usual rhythm for winter visitors is arrival around October, peak numbers from December to February, and departure north in March. The flocks move at dawn and dusk, so aim for around sunrise or sunset.

The river cameras are there for the ministry to watch water levels. Most of the time they show a quiet stretch of river; in heavy rain they mean something else. Note that these systems come under load exactly when flooding is worst, so there is a case for staying off them and leaving capacity to the people who need them.
