Sample August 2026
Kirishima Range from Ebino Plateau
Ebino, Miyazaki · Volcano
A group of volcanoes headed by Mount Karakuni, seen across the plateau. Rime ice coats everything in winter; azaleas colour the slopes in early summer.
-
Sample August 2026
Shinmoedake, Kirishima
Miyazaki / Kagoshima border · Volcano
The crater that erupted in 2011 and 2018. The camera at Inokoishi stays fixed on Shinmoedake.

Gokase River
Nobeoka, Miyazaki · River
The water that carved Takachiho Gorge reaches the Hyuga Sea at Nobeoka. Three rivers meet at the mouth, and the confluence is the thing to watch in a flood.

Komaru River
Takanabe, Miyazaki · River
It drops straight from the Kyushu mountains to the coast at Takanabe. Typhoons come through here, and rough weather changes it dramatically.

Oyodo River
Miyazaki · River
It meanders widely through central Miyazaki to the Hyuga Sea. The city presses against the levees, so town lights sit alongside the water.
When to watch
The view of the Kirishima range from Ebino Kogen takes in a whole line of craters from the side. The Shinmoedake camera narrows to one of them. The same massif, watched broadly and watched at a single point.
Kirishima means 'island of fog', and the name is earned: a blank white screen is nothing unusual here. Dry, breezy days are the ones that give you the ridgeline.
