What you can see
Out of Alaska's volcano cameras, these four are the ones with ice sitting on the mountain. They are gathered on one point: ice and fire in the same frame.
At Redoubt, the ice-filled summit crater opens to the north and the Drift Glacier flows out of it. The crater is the outlet for the ice. Of the four, this is where the cause and effect are easiest to see.
Iliamna is a 3,053 m stratovolcano with glaciers running down radially from the summit. There is no record of an eruption, yet steam keeps rising from its flank. The steam alone tells you there is heat under the ice.
At Veniaminof, an active vent stands 330 m above the ice surface inside an ice-filled caldera. Ice below, vent above - the relationship is visible as it is.
Makushin is an 1,800 m volcano whose summit is covered by a 40 km² icefield, standing on the same island as Dutch Harbor, one of America's biggest fishing ports. Of the four, this is the one closest to where people live.
The reason to keep them together: you get four versions of the same relationship between ice and heat - ice flowing out, steam coming through ice, a vent breaking out of ice, and ice covering the summit entirely.

Mount Makushin

An 1,800 m volcano on the same island as Dutch Harbor, one of the busiest fishing ports in the United States. Its summit carries an icefield of about 40 km².
When to watch
The operator publishes no viewing season, and we will not invent one here. The glacier flowing from the crater, the radial glaciers, the continuing steam, the 330 m vent and the 40 km² icefield all come from the camera descriptions. Nothing is said about when snow or ice increases, so we set nothing.
All four run on Alaska time: 17 hours behind Japan on daylight time, 18 hours behind on standard time. Calculated: 03:00 Japan time on daylight time, or 04:00 on standard time, is 10:00 locally (checked 2026-09-07).
Watch from the small hours to dawn in East Asia. Plenty of days mean a white mountain under a white sky, so open these expecting to wait for a day when the outline shows.
