Penguins and Flamingos: 2 Live Cameras — Breeding colonies
Two cameras in South Africa. Both watch breeding colonies, and at both the counts taken from the camera feed straight into the conservation record.
What you can see
Both are South African breeding colonies. What they share is that the numbers counted from the camera are themselves the conservation data.
African penguins at Stony Point (Betty's Bay, Western Cape) is a nature reserve where the penguins come ashore to breed. Nests are scattered between the rocks and low scrub, and birds returning from the sea walk up in single file. The species is endangered, so this stream doubles as a record of how many nests there are.
Lesser flamingos at Kimberley (Northern Cape) is a breeding site designated an Important Bird Area. The camera made it possible to count them at all, and that count is used for their protection. A pink crowd stands in shallow water.

Lesser flamingos at Kimberley

A lesser flamingo breeding site designated a globally important bird and biodiversity area. The camera makes possible counts that could not be taken before, and those numbers feed the conservation work. Pink birds stand in shallow water in a mass.
When to watch
For both the provider gives no season. A breeding colony changes through the year, but we are not going to invent a date for it here.
South Africa is 7 hours behind Japan, with no daylight saving. Local 06:00 is 13:00 in Japan, local noon is 19:00, and local 18:00 is 01:00. So the local daylight hours run from Japanese afternoon to late evening.
Penguins go out to sea and come back, so the file of birds crossing the beach is likeliest in the morning and evening — local morning is early Japanese afternoon, local evening is the middle of the Japanese night.
