Yumigahama Beach: 1 Live Camera in Japan

A sand beach at the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula, in Minami-Izu, Shizuoka. In summer, swimmers; the rest of the year only the waves and the pines move.

What you can see

Yumigahama is a sand beach in Minami-Izu, Shizuoka, at the southern end of the Izu Peninsula. The name means bow beach, and what the camera shows is exactly that: a shore curved like a drawn bow with a quiet inlet inside it. A pine wood runs along behind the sand.

The camera belongs to the Environment Ministry's Internet Nature Institute. It was not put there to report wave height or how busy the beach is; it is a scenery camera.

This coast is where the Kuroshio arrives. The Kuroshio is the warm current that runs west to east along Japan's southern shore, and the southern tip of Izu takes it head-on. That is why the water here never cools all the way down, even in winter.

What moves changes with the season: swimmers in summer, and for the rest of the year only the waves and the pines.

When to watch

It refreshes once an hour. The movement of the waves will not show.

The morning calm is the best of it. With no wind the water inside the inlet goes flat.

For the crowd, midday in summer, when people spread out on the sand and colour gathers at the waterline.

Nothing shows once the light goes, and here it goes early — by the time the sun is low the frame is already dark. When a typhoon comes near, the waves reach far up the beach, but at one still an hour the state of the sea is hard to read from the picture.
