What you can see

Seto Inland Sea from Goshikidai looks down from a plateau that juts out between Sakaide and Takamatsu, over a sea full of islands. On the far shore, in Okayama, another camera looks at the same water from Washuzan, facing almost exactly the other way. The two sit side by side on The Seto Inland Sea page.

The islands line up differently in the two views because they are not separate points floating on the sea; they are the high parts of a drowned range of hills. Whether you look across the line of ridges or straight along it changes how they overlap. From the Shikoku side the islands stack up in layers; from the Okayama side the channels between them open out.

Goshikidai itself has a shape that gives away how this land was made. The hills scattered over the Sanuki plain tend to have flat tops and steep sides, like a cap set on a slope — Yashima is another. A hard layer of lava remains on top while the softer beds beneath it were cut away, and the rim of the flat top makes a natural viewpoint. That geology is why the camera's angle is both high and level.

When to watch

Because it is a still image, one frame swaps for another each time you open it. Rather than following movement, it suits opening at the same hour on different days and watching how the haze changes.

The Inland Sea hazes over even on clear days, and whether the far shore is visible comes down to the air that day. The source does not publish a best season, so we do not set one here either.
