Nature: 71 Live Cameras
National parks, wetlands, lakes, old-growth forest. Cameras that show the landscape itself — nothing is about to happen, and that is the point.
What you can see
These are the slow cameras. Where volcano and river cameras exist to catch something going wrong, these sit in Environment Ministry nature parks and at university and research observation sites. Some are essentially an afterthought bolted to equipment measuring how much carbon dioxide a forest is absorbing.
Most refresh hourly rather than streaming. But a still image arguably shows the day's light better than video does. Three frames — morning, midday, evening — and the colour of a marsh or the reflection on a lake are completely different things.
Wetlands, raised bogs, caldera lakes, beech forest, dunes. Japan packs an unusual range of these into a small area, so opening them in order from Hokkaido down to Kyushu shows the same season sliding across the latitudes.

-
Live video
Yeonhwabong, Sobaeksan
Danyang, North Chungcheong · Nature

Cheonjedan, Taebaeksan

-
Live video

-
Live video
Jukmak trail, Byeonsanbando
Buan, North Jeolla · Sea · Nature
A coastal path on a peninsula reaching into the Yellow Sea. Unlike Japan's Pacific coast, the sun sets over the water here, so clear evenings show it well.
-
Live video, trial stream
Ishigakijima Observatory night-sky camera
Ishigaki, Okinawa · Space · Nature
Streamed from beside the dome of the 105 cm Murikabushi telescope, near the summit of Mt. Maezu at 230 m. At latitude 24°N the Southern Cross clears the southern horizon on winter and spring nights, which it never does from mainland Japan; in summer the bright core of the Milky Way passes overhead. The feed is still a trial and may stop without notice.
When to watch
Autumn colour, October into November, is the clearest change of the year. It starts in late September in Hokkaido's Daisetsuzan range and takes about six weeks to work down through Tohoku and the central highlands to western Japan. Open several in the same week and you can watch the front move.
Winter swaps the picture entirely, depending on whether snow falls. Wetlands go white and only the shapes of trees remain. Once the snow sets in, a camera may ice over and show nothing for days — that is not a fault, it happens every year.
For time of day, aim for the half hour either side of sunrise. A still morning turns a lake into a mirror, and in autumn radiative cooling fills a marsh with fog until only the tops of the trees show.
