Qingtiangang grassland live camera — Yangmingshan, Taipei
Grassland on top of a lava plateau. It is what is left of a ranch from the Japanese colonial period, and half-wild water buffalo still graze there.
What you are looking at
A dark brown fence crosses the lower third of the frame, with a paved path and a small open plaza in front of it. Beyond the fence runs a band of low scrub, and past that, grass-covered ridges follow one another from left to right. On the day of this sample, cumulus kept building until it filled half the sky.
Qingtiangang stands at about 770 metres, and the loop path around it rises and falls by barely forty. What covers the ground is carpet grass, Axonopus affinis, a low turf grass; part of why it looks freshly mown is that the buffalo keep eating it back.
Taiwan is one hour behind Japan, and there is no summer time, so the gap stays the same all year. Eight in the morning in Japan is seven in Taiwan.
In 1934 the Taihoku Prefecture Agricultural Association turned this area into the Tairei pasture, taking in farmers’ draught cattle and grazing them here through the summer; at its peak some 1,600 head were kept. As cultivators spread and draught cattle fell out of use, fewer farms sent animals, and in 1985 the area was taken into Yangmingshan National Park. The buffalo that were left stayed on the grassland. After a visitor was gored and killed in 2018, fencing went up at the end of 2019 and the herd was enclosed within about 42 hectares. The fence crossing the bottom of the frame is that fence, put there to keep people and buffalo apart.
The buffalo come into the frame and go out of it again, so they are not there every time you look. The fog is the more reliable thing: cloud comes over the ridge here, and an all-white frame is nothing unusual. When that happens, leave it a while and open it again.
