Hokkaido rivers 1 live camera — Hokkaido
The first of two streams from the Hokkaido Regional Development Bureau. Between them they cycle through cameras at 32 points on 13 river systems, among them the Ishikari, Teshio, Tokachi and Kushiro. Levels rise with the spring melt and again at the end of summer, when the typhoons arrive.
What you are looking at
The sample came from 25.7kp on the Yubetsugawa, at Engaru Bridge in Engaru, Hokkaido, and the text burned into the picture said as much. The white pier and railing of the bridge stand at the left edge; the river runs shallow here and breaks white over the stones. The far bank is a stone revetment, with a road and a green embankment above it. The willows on the bank had turned yellow.
This is the first of the two streams. It works through the stations in turn, so a different river is on each time you open it. Where you are looking is given by the river name and the distance mark burned into the bottom of the picture; 25.7kp means 25.7 kilometres up from the river mouth.
The Yubetsugawa rises on Tengudake in the Ishikari mountains and runs 87 kilometres to the Sea of Okhotsk at Yubetsu. Its basin is 1,480 square kilometres, and close to nine tenths of that is forest. Below the town of Engaru the bed slackens off, and the river takes the form seen in the sample, riffles and gravel bars one after another.
It earns its keep in heavy rain and during the spring melt. Decide about evacuating from what your local authority says.
